How to effectively increase penetration in MIG welding?

2026-06-23

The core way to increase weld penetration in MIG welding is to adjust welding parameters. It can improve arc heat input and arc penetration. Here are the simple and effective methods:

1. Adjust Core Welding Parameters

Increase welding current
This is the most direct and effective method. Higher current brings stronger arc energy. It can effectively increase weld penetration. Users need to match the correct voltage. It can avoid excessive spatter and burn-through caused by too high current.
Reduce arc voltage
Users can lower the voltage within a reasonable range. This operation shortens the arc length. It improves the arc penetration on the base metal. It also reduces weld width and increases weld penetration at the same time.
Slow down welding speed
A slower welding speed makes the arc act on the base metal for a longer time. Heat can transfer fully into the base metal. The weld penetration will become deeper. Note that too slow speed will cause weld bead accumulation and workpiece deformation.

2. Optimize Operation and Equipment Settings

Shorten wire extension length
Control the wire extension length at the standard range. It reduces the resistance heat loss of the welding wire. More arc energy can act on the base metal directly. It effectively improves weld penetration.
Select the right wire diameter
Under the same welding current, thin welding wire has higher current density. It has stronger arc penetration than thick wire. For example, 1.0mm wire creates deeper penetration than 1.2mm wire.
Adjust welding torch angle
Users can tilt the welding torch forward by 10° to 15° toward the welding direction. This angle makes arc force focus on the deep part of the base metal. It boosts weld penetration. Users need to adjust the angle properly for vertical and overhead welding. It can prevent molten droplet falling.

3. Other Auxiliary Measures

Clean the base metal surface
Remove rust, oil and oxide scale on the base metal surface. These impurities will block heat transfer. Cleaning ensures arc energy acts on the base metal effectively.
Use matched shielding gas
For carbon steel welding, pure carbon dioxide shielding gas can create larger weld penetration. It will produce more spatter at the same time. It is a good choice for improving welding penetration.
