What Causes Solidification Cracking?

Material composition: Sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P) can form low-melting-point compounds. These compounds make the grain boundaries weaker. 

Welding parameters: Too much heat input, fast cooling, or high joint restraint can create high stress in the weld. 

Microstructure: Columnar grains let impurities collect along the grain boundaries. This makes cracking more likely. 

Which Materials Are More Likely to Crack? 

Materials with high sulfur or phosphorus content are more likely to develop solidification cracking. Austenitic stainless steels, such as 304 and 316, also have a higher risk because they expand more when heated and do not transfer heat as quickly. 

How Can You Prevent It? 

You can lower the risk of solidification cracking by using the right materials and good welding practices. 

Use base materials and filler metals with low sulfur and phosphorus content. Use the right welding parameters to control heat input and cooling speed. Reduce joint restraint as much as possible. Clean the welding surface before welding. Remove oil, rust, and other dirt. Follow the correct welding procedure, especially when welding stainless steel.
